What is the Logistics Sector?
Logistics, or as it is also known, the transportation sector; can be defined as a means to supply products, services, and human resources at the desired location and at the required time. Having logistics support within any marketing or production organization is of great importance. It is quite challenging to succeed without logistics support.
The Status of the Logistics Sector in Turkey and Worldwide
Historically, the Turkish logistics sector has been influential predominantly in rail and road transport. It has made a significant leap forward with combined transport, which covers all modes of transportation including land, air, sea, and rail, that began in the 1980s. With the strengthened infrastructure for combined transport in the 1990s, by the 2000s, it transformed into a system that meets global standards. With the establishment of quality standards and service diversity initiated since the early 2000s, Turkish logistics companies that have started to operate actively in other countries and set up foreign liaison offices have been a significant factor in announcing Turkey's logistics sector potential to the world.
Since 2010, when we look at the composition of the 15 countries that have shown the highest performance in logistics activities, including those that have not changed marginally, dominant countries in the logistics sector such as the Netherlands, Germany, and Singapore are seen in the top 15. Germany, in particular, has been the country with the highest score in the logistics performance index since 2010. Additionally, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Denmark, and New Zealand also draw attention with the momentum they possess in their logistics performance index scores. It has been observed that high-income countries have an average performance that is 48% higher than that of low-income countries.
